Perhaps it’s a few days late, but I’ve been undecided on my New Year’s resolutions for 2015. I’m not very fond of resolutions (I can’t remember a single one I’ve ever managed to keep), so I didn’t even start thinking about them until January 1st. I started to realize that something truly does seem different about this year, and that difference is Wander Driven. By creating this blog, I’ve made a conscious effort to shift my priorities and finally travel like I’ve been wanting to my entire life.
2015 doesn’t hold as much travel in store for me as I’ve seen other bloggers posting about, nor is it as much as I’d particularly like. But the amount of travel I’ll be able to do depends entirely on how quickly I can move from host to waitress at my new job. That said, I am going to a couple of places in the United States for sure.
Walt Disney World
On February 5th, I will be driving down to Orlando, Florida with a group of friends for ten days at the parks and to visit the beaches. Admittedly, this is a trip I jumped on for it being a good time with friends and a good deal. I love Disney, but I’ve never particularly been drawn to Florida, and I’m not usually a fan of going to a place more than once. But nonetheless, it’ll be the first time I’ve been out of the Midwest in ten years, and I’ve been craving some sun lately.
Boston
Mike says he wants to go sometime in the spring, maybe summer, but I’m thinking, unless money works out better than I’m imagining it, I’m expecting this to be a late summer to fall trip. I’m not sure if we’ll be flying or driving yet. The current plan is to spend three days getting to and seeing Boston, then on the fourth day drive from Boston to Salem. Days five and six to see Salem, and going home on the seventh. Nothing is set in stone for this trip, but I’m very excited regardless!
While these are the only two places I have plans to go to, I also have a few other resolutions for 2015.
Get a passport
I haven’t been out of the Midwest in ten years, but I haven’t been out of the country in 14 when my family went on vacation to Cancun. Since I was only seven at the time, this was back when a passport or enhanced ID wasn’t required to get into Canada or Mexico. But a passport is a requirement for me to accomplish my dreams of traveling, and once I have the extra cash (in about two months, by my estimate) I’m not going to delay any longer.
Go camping
I’ve never been much of an outdoorsy person, especially with my arachnophobia. But at the same time, as a photographer, there’s nothing I love more than photographing nature. So, in an effort to catch some awesome shots of the world we live in, I want to get out and experience more of that world. I want to go to campgrounds with waterfalls, I want to revisit the Smoky Mountains with a camera, and go hiking on beautiful trails.
Create a travel savings account
I haven’t totally figured this one out yet. I don’t know if I can open a separate savings account from my regular one, or if I would just have to put that money away in my current one. Either way, this year I want to have a designated place for my travel fund, rather than just keeping it all so easily accessible in my checking account for days when I happen to binge on retail therapy.
My favorite part of these resolutions is that they’re all very achievable goals. I’m going a bit out of my comfort zone, but not so far that I’m going to stop after the first shot. And once these things are within my normal comfort zone, I’m going to expand that zone once again.
Are you traveling this year or staying at home? Tell me your plans and resolutions in the comments!
